No task is too small in the theatre world, from working in the box office to sitting in during auditions. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be a theatre intern, it all depends on the day.
“I could be helping out with musicals, the next commercials, plays or films,” says Spencer Gualdoni, who interned for Telsey + Company casting agency. “I learned that you shouldn’t sweat the small things and just be the best ‘you’ you can be,” he continues. And if you’ve ever wanted to start your career in theatre, you should consider working as a production assistant! PAs work with many people during a production, providing all sorts of assistance to the cast and crew. It’s also one of the best ways to find your spot in the industry if you’re unsure about what you want to do.
In a panel at BroadwayCon, Ann Harada recounted her time as a PA, saying, “You will find a place to belong in the theatre if that’s what you love….[just] say ‘yes’ to everything.” You can read the full panel here, as well as hear from other leaders in the industry who started as PAs.

When searching for a theatre internship, it’s always best to be open about your options. You may not get an internship on Broadway right away, but you’ll be able to open doors and build relationships as you progress.
